Staph infection yearlyQ: My 8 year old blenheim cavalier has staph infections all summer long, starting in early spring and lasting until late fall. it's never-ending. he has been on 500 mg. of cephalexin, hexdene shampoo, plus a bunch of other shots, etc., totaling over $200 a month ago. (vet price per pill of this is 67.5 cents.) is it possible to keep him on the anti-biotic cephalexin all summer? he has been on prednisone for long periods in the past, but that bothers me greatly. he seems to do well and the other complications don't occur, such as ear infections, eye problems, etc. when he is on the cephalexin. clavamox really doesn't do the trick. each year seems to get worse. our vet also has suggested changing his diet to venison and potato. any ideas on that? his half-brother, a tri-color cav has none of this, only dry skin. A: It is possible to keep an animal on long term cephalexin therapy as long as the drug is not discontinued before the infection is cleared. there is the issue of developing resistance to the antibiotic if therapy is started and stopped without completely clearing the infection.

Really bad smelly dogQ: I have a cocker/schitzu mix 10 years old. he has been on antibiotics for this problem but still smells so bad. the vet said not to bathe him too often , but yuck. he is raw only on his underside. i have done the oatmeal bathes too. help!!!!!!!!!! please!!!!!!!!! could it be something else? sincerely, beth A: I bet you he has yeast overgrowth on his skin given the breed mix he is. have vet check for this; antibiotics dont helpthis but an oral drug like ketaconazole can as well as antifungal shampoos
Ear mites & mangeQ: I have my dog back and forth to the vet for a few months now. first i was told she had earmites and that she had to have a series of shots which she had. she has had revolution, special shampoos, then all of a sudden i'm being told she has another kind of a mite. and so were starting all over again. this has been going on now for at least 4 months. the last thing that they did lasted for about 3 weeks. i was told the problem was over and done with but $500 plus dollars later i still have the problem. i called and told these so called vets and they said bring her back. i said do i have to pay more money for her to be looked at again for the same problem they said was over with and of course i was told yes i don't think that this was very fair especially for someone who is disabled and on a very, very fixed income, but they showed how much they care about animals the only thing they cared about was more money. it does not matter if the dog is suffering all over again. i have no more money that is the gods honest truth. i would like to know what i could get that would help her? her biggest problem is that her hair is falling out and she has a really bad odor. so far her ears seem to be ok. please, please help me i don't know what else to do except take her to a shelter so they can take care of her so shes not suffering. that is the last thing in the world i want to do she is such a lovable, smart, wonderful companion, but i wont let her suffer. please please help me. thank you very much for letting me take up your time. and if anyone would like to know who this so called vet is i would be more than happy to tell them. thanks again. A: Sorry about your experiences as it soudns like best thing is for vet dermatologist to have looked at dog and you would not be going through all of this. best i can suggest is chlorihexiderm shampoo from 1800petmeds used every few days and also use aloe vera conditioner from them as well. try blue ear ointment for any ear issues www.itsfortheanimals.com which you can buy your own ingredients
