Itching continuesQ: Our 1 year old female is constatnly scratching herself. she looks so uncomfortable! she has been on frontline and heartguard sice she was old enough to get it and recently was spayed. the vet can not determine what is wrong. no fleas. is there a supplement i can give her or anti itch medications? A: I would supplement her with omega 3 fatty acids like derm caps from 1800petmeds or flax seed oil at dose of 1 tea per 20 pounds of body weight daily. also purchase prozyme as source of digestive enzymes which can help long term. also periodic bathing with oatmeal shampoon and daily condioner like episoothe is helpful as well. you could try antihistamines at same time like benadryl at 1 mg per pound twice daily or hydroxyzine at same dose. if these no help may need allergy testing or restricted low allergy diet. also make sure pet has been skin scraped by vet for skin parasites

Rough black skinQ: I have a german shephard/chow mix breed dog. he gets rough dry black in color and loses his hair mainly around his hind legs. but it has also moved to his left ear. the vet says it is yeast and gave me shampoo & ear drops nothing seems to be working .she also gave him a cortisone shot.could this be something else? thanks! A: If truly fungal, than you might want to ask your vet about oral antifungal drugs like itraconazole or ketaconazole which sometimes are more effective than just topical therapies. if your vet not making progress, consider direct exam by second vet or vet dermatologist to address underyling causes as well like allergies, thyroid issues, etc

How long?Q: My 6 month old boxer is on orbax 68 mg one a day, nizoral 200 mg 1/2 a day and medrol now at 1 mg a day. he is on malaseb shampoo for what the dermatologist has diagnosed as a "yeast infection" allergic dermatitis, folliculitis...it has been 3 weeks and there has been improvement but he still bites at his paws they are very pinkish still and he breaks out into these little bumps around his body. he has 3 weeks left of his meds. my question is would you recommend anything else? how about boosting his immune system. p.s. he is on ivd duck and potato food and can eat veggies and fruits. thank you for any advice you may have. A: I would ask allergist about allergy testing for inhalent allergies through blood or skin test for best long term relief. also can ask allergist about new drug called atopica which is steroid alternative and safer than medrol to use long term
Big white flakes on furQ: My black chow is having a time this summer with biting his hind fur off. now when i push his fur in the oposite direction i see his entire undercoat is extremely dry and flaking badly. should i pour baby oil on him or give him fish oil capsules in his food?
