Scratching and biting hair off
Q: I have a one yr old black and white chihuahua. for the last 6 months has been scratchinhg and biting her hair of completely from feet, legs backside. she is on advantix and is free of fleas. her vet has her on predisone 1/2 pill every three days now. also bendadryl 25mg 1/4 daily. bathe with oatmeal shampoo. i know allergy testing is next, but thought doggie prozac might be next. also she slows down on the biting and scratching when my daughter holds her (lap dog) are we doing the right thing with this treatment or what do you advise? save my chloe!!!!
A: Allergy testing does appear to be the next step of the process.
Shop for: advantix

Itching continues
Q: Our 1 year old female is constatnly scratching herself. she looks so uncomfortable! she has been on frontline and heartguard sice she was old enough to get it and recently was spayed. the vet can not determine what is wrong. no fleas. is there a supplement i can give her or anti itch medications?
A: I would supplement her with omega 3 fatty acids like derm caps from 1800petmeds or flax seed oil at dose of 1 tea per 20 pounds of body weight daily. also purchase prozyme as source of digestive enzymes which can help long term. also periodic bathing with oatmeal shampoon and daily condioner like episoothe is helpful as well. you could try antihistamines at same time like benadryl at 1 mg per pound twice daily or hydroxyzine at same dose. if these no help may need allergy testing or restricted low allergy diet. also make sure pet has been skin scraped by vet for skin parasites
Shop for: antihistamine, prozyme, 1800petmeds

Rough black skin
Q: I have a german shephard/chow mix breed dog. he gets rough dry black in color and loses his hair mainly around his hind legs. but it has also moved to his left ear. the vet says it is yeast and gave me shampoo & ear drops nothing seems to be working .she also gave him a cortisone shot.could this be something else? thanks!
A: If truly fungal, than you might want to ask your vet about oral antifungal drugs like itraconazole or ketaconazole which sometimes are more effective than just topical therapies. if your vet not making progress, consider direct exam by second vet or vet dermatologist to address underyling causes as well like allergies, thyroid issues, etc

Fleas
Q: Help! i have two cats and a ferret. we have never had a flea problem until the little danny the ferret joined our home. do you have meds that can help him? can you use cat flea meds? thanks for you time and help.
A: On ferrets i stick with pyethrin sprays or shampoos which you can ask about at 1800petmeds or local pet store
Shop for: 1800petmeds, tick

Dark rough skin
Q: I have a schnauzer mix, she is 6 years old. lately, i have noticed that she has a large black lump of skin with no hair around her tail. i have recently been told that it is called elephant skin. is there anything i can get to reat this? and, can i get it from you are will i have to take her to my vet? thanks.
A: Ask vet to check for overgrowth of yeast in area which can be treated with topical antifungal shampoos like ketachlor from 1800petmeds as well as topical salves like lotrisone over the counter. use the shampoos regularly on this area
Shop for: 1800petmeds

Scatching,lose oh hair,
Q: My 9 year old cat started losing her hair on her back side. she is an inside cat. i have another cat that is inside outside. i had a flea collar on her but she became infested by fleas anyway. she started to get sores around her neck and head. i started to use a natural flea collar on her and bathing her with flea shampoo. the problem is getting worse. she is know sratching herself until she bleeds and i know she is in pain. i can not afford to take her to a vet right know. what can i do to relive her.
A: I think you should use one of the topoical flea control products such as frontline plus or advantage. you should also check our website under "education" & "flea control" to get some ideas on how to control the fleas in your home.
Shop for: advantage, frontline plus, frontline

How long?
Q: My 6 month old boxer is on orbax 68 mg one a day, nizoral 200 mg 1/2 a day and medrol now at 1 mg a day. he is on malaseb shampoo for what the dermatologist has diagnosed as a "yeast infection" allergic dermatitis, folliculitis...it has been 3 weeks and there has been improvement but he still bites at his paws they are very pinkish still and he breaks out into these little bumps around his body. he has 3 weeks left of his meds. my question is would you recommend anything else? how about boosting his immune system. p.s. he is on ivd duck and potato food and can eat veggies and fruits. thank you for any advice you may have.
A: I would ask allergist about allergy testing for inhalent allergies through blood or skin test for best long term relief. also can ask allergist about new drug called atopica which is steroid alternative and safer than medrol to use long term

Big white flakes on fur
Q: My black chow is having a time this summer with biting his hind fur off. now when i push his fur in the oposite direction i see his entire undercoat is extremely dry and flaking badly. should i pour baby oil on him or give him fish oil capsules in his food?
A: I would try good supplement like brite coat xs from 1800petmeds as well as prozyme. also try chlorihexiderm shampoo every few days. if no help see vet
Shop for: prozyme, 1800petmeds
