Shedding and dry skin
Q: I have 3 dogs, two 4 y/o border collie mix and one 1 y/o border collie/lab mix. all three have dry skin and scratch until they develop sores all in the same spots on the front upper portion of their legs. i tried an anti-bacterial shampoo to no avail, but now the 1 y/o started shedding hair in clumps from her back and thighs and still scratching. shortly after she started shedding, one of my 4 y/o started shedding, too. is it true that oatmeal shampoo helps restore the oil that they lose from bathing? can you just sprinkle dry oatmeal in their food as well? thanks for your response. janice
A: Dry oatmeal does not work as well but good shampoos like 1800petmeds aloe vera and oatmeal shampoo and conditioner are excellent here. also you should consider allergy workup at your vet for inhalent allergies or food allergies as causes of itching, etc try brite coat xs from 1800petmeds as source of fatty acids for coats long term health

Dry skin
Q: I just wanted to find out some of the different ways i can treat my golden's dry skin? we do the oatmeal shampoo, and we have tried a humidifier in the home but nothing has helped. she does not itch very often at all, the skin just appears dry.
A: You may want to have complete thyroid panel done at your vet to make sure not low thyroid which is common in this breed and can cause dry skin. definitely work with diet by feeding good natural diet like pet guard or california natural by natura brand foods. also consider adding supplements like prozyme to her diet from 1800petmeds as well as flax seed oil at dose of 1 tea per 20 pounds of body weight daily. also may want to check out dr. pitcairns book called dr. pitcairns guide to natural health for dogs and cats by richard pitcairn which has further info on diets and supplements which may help

Dachsaund has lost hair from scratching
Q: My dog has just about lost all his hair every where he can gnaw. i have taken him to three vets and they all say different things. one said he is allergic to our grass. i have had him given one allergy shot and it helped him for three weeks. i am wanting to know if i can get something that i can give him myself. have tried the benedryl and selsen blue shampoo trick also and it did not help. please help me and him. he is miserable and so am i.
A: The long acting cortisone injections are not good for his immune system or adrenal glands and usually wear off in time you state where itching comes right back. you oould ask your vet for prescription for low dose oral prednisone which you can taper to every other day therapy after a few weeks but stay away from injections. you could also ask about new drug called atopica which is steroid alternative without as many side effects long term. ideally should allergy test to find out what allergic to so vaccines can be developed if problems keep reoccurring, and also consider low allergy diet in case food involved
Shop for: prednisone

Body and feet odor
Q: I have 2 basset hounds and i bathe them at least 1 time a week. they seem to get dirty fast. maybe because they are soooo low to the ground. but their feet always smell like a new bag of fritos being opened and it drives me nuts. have you ever heard this before? i hope you have some ideas because giving them a bath once a week is getting to be too much. abby weighs 50lbs and molly 48lbs. i do not take them to the groomer just because they are like my children and i love them to death. so please any suggestions would be grateful. thanks, lisa, abby and molly
A: I would have vet exam as they could have yeast infection which is common in this breed often secondary to allergies. i would try ketochlor shampoo from 1800petmeds applied daily to area and let sit for 10 minutes before rinsing off feet to see if improves
