Dachsaund has lost hair from scratchingQ: My dog has just about lost all his hair every where he can gnaw. i have taken him to three vets and they all say different things. one said he is allergic to our grass. i have had him given one allergy shot and it helped him for three weeks. i am wanting to know if i can get something that i can give him myself. have tried the benedryl and selsen blue shampoo trick also and it did not help. please help me and him. he is miserable and so am i. A: The long acting cortisone injections are not good for his immune system or adrenal glands and usually wear off in time you state where itching comes right back. you oould ask your vet for prescription for low dose oral prednisone which you can taper to every other day therapy after a few weeks but stay away from injections. you could also ask about new drug called atopica which is steroid alternative without as many side effects long term. ideally should allergy test to find out what allergic to so vaccines can be developed if problems keep reoccurring, and also consider low allergy diet in case food involved

Tried everything!Q: I have literally tried everything to get rid of fleas for my indoor dog and cat in the past 2 months; from bombing, sprays, powders, dips, shampoos, etc. -- treating house, carpet, furniture, bedding, yard, and the animals. they are both now on their 2nd dose of frontline plus, but still have some fleas. is is ok to use both frontline plus and capstar tablets? and, is there something oral for the cat? i will continue to treat the house and yard; however, can sprays and powders be used in addition to the frontline. i just don't want to hurt overdose or give them a skin reaction. A: You can use capstar tablets by mouth daily until you get over the hump.
