Do i need to bomb the house?Q: My neighbors have fleas and today i found one flea on one of my two indoor cats. i can't find anymore fleas but to be safe i'm bathing them in flea shampoo and applying frontline plus. however do i need to bomb the house or will vacuuming work since there seems to be no hatched fleas? also should i worry that the cats have tapeworm? A: Tapeworms are possible but i would wait and see. they are not real health threatening to most pets. also since you got right on top of it the bathing and front line should be enough.

K9 advantix vs biospot vs frontline plusQ: Hi, it looks like from your chart that biospot does more than the rest. we have bad mosquitos here in chicago and i worry about them as much as fleas and ticks. also, it seems like you recommend frontline more, why? and, does biospot wash off completely after bathing. what if you put it on and don't bath the dog for a few days? will it stay on the rest of the month then? thanks for all your help. we have a golden retriever that is 60 pounds. sherri A: K-9 advantix is completely waterproof. biospot will begin to loose effectiveness after shampooing. i recommend frontline plus based on my experience, but if you need mosquito control as well, you should use k-9 advantix.

Fleas on humansQ: I read the question someone else asked and your treatment. i think they are in my daughter`s hair and a simple shower is not the trick. i did a rid x treatment on her. is it ok to try flea shampoo? some are telling me they are lice but i have researched both and i think they are fleas. A: I would not recommend dog products on humans. i would see a human dermatologist for best treatment as well as definitive diagnosis. fleas do not live on people especially after bathing them off. at least the fleas that our dogs and cats get
Flea collars and frontline plusQ: Our cats have been infested with fleas for about 2 weeks, and we put sergeant's flea collars on them, to no avail. would it be safe to start using frontline plus on them now? if not, how long should we wait? thank you. A: Remove the collars and apply the frontline plus.

LickingQ: I have a two and half year old shih-izu. she licks herself all the time. we have tried medicated shampoos and creams. but nothing seems to work. do you have any suggestions on what to do? she doen't have fleas. she is an inside dog. A: Likely has allergies either inhalent or food allergies. could try a natural hypoallergenic diet like california natural by natura, a lamb and rice based food. antihistamines sometimes help like benadryl at a dose of 1 mg per pound of body weight twice daily. also could ask about allergy testing at your vet

Scabby skinQ: My 5 year old over weight cocker has developed a bad skin problem. he doesn't seem to be scratching at all but while petting him you can feel large crusty patches over his entire body. feels like a scab. any ideas that we can try to help his skin return to normal. A: He may have a scaling disorder known as seborrhea, which can be secondary to many possiblth things including thyroid problems, food allergies and other things. you shoud ask yuur vet about this. for now try oatmeal shampoos every few days to the areas as well as adding some flax seed oil to his food at 1 teaspoon per 20 pounds of body weight daily which can help over several months
Raised red spotsQ: I have a 8yr old golden that has 4 to 6 elliptical red spots the size of a quarter on her belly along with other redish splotches (not raised) but very irritated and itchy. this looked a bit like typical hot spots but seem to mostly dissipate in a few hours after an anti-itch shampoo. i'm also wondering about some fungus similar to ringworm but there seems to be no loss of hair at these areas. she had been to the groomer recently and we suspect some infection while in a kennel, etc. any ideas? A: Does not sound like ringworm. likely an bacterial infection from allergies. sounds like may need antibiotics from your vet in addition to allergy treatment
