Demodex (red mange)Q: My 6 mo. old lab mix was diagnosed with demodex just yesterday. she has started the ivermectin treatments, the brand i was given is ivomec. my question is what supplements can i give her to ensure a healthy coat and help give her immune system a boost? i would also like to know if you have any suggestions for itch relief. i have bailey on benadryl and i put lanacane cream on her. i also am bathing her weekly w/ a anti-bacterial shampoo w/ sulphur. just want to know if there is anything else i can do to make her more comfortable until the ivomec kicks in. thank you very much. A: For immune system i would try digestive enzymes like prozyme as well as essential fatty acids like flax seed oil at 1 tea per 20 pounds of body weight daily. i also like a supplement available from healthfood stores for this condition known as dimethyl glycine(dmg) at dose of 250 mg daily. for itching i would temporarily use oral benadryl at 1 mg per pound twice daily and try some blue aloe gel shampoo from 1800petmeds Shop for: ivomec, prozyme, 1800petmeds
Yeast in catQ: My 13 year old cat has been dx with yeast. she has a pungent odor and discharge that mats the hair in the anal area. the vet had me shampoo her with malaseb. i did so for several months, but it did not help. is there anything that can be given orally for this problem? it seems to be coming from her inside, not a skin problem. your help would be appreciated. A: If seems to be coming from inside make sure no problems on bloodwork. occasionally can use oral antifungals but many cats have side effects from them. sounds more like anal gland problem to me. have another opinion
Constant itchingQ: I have a pure breed minature poodle that is constantly scratching himself. there are no skin abrasions or even any open wounds. he seems to scratch and lick alot.there are no fleas occasionally he gets a tick that i carefully remove. we are using k9 advantix at present but i ordering frontline instead. i am also putting a small amount of oil on his food to see if that stops it. i bathe him with johnsons baby shampoo my vet sais that would be okay. any suggestions? A: I would use corticare shampoo every few days from 1800petmeds as well as corticare lotion in between. also try better oil like flax seed oil at dose of 1 tea per 20 pounds of body weight daily which can help when used long term. also consider prozyme from 1800petmeds added to food.l at same time might want to use antihistamine like chlortrimeton at dose of 1 mg twice daily or one of prescription ones from your vet

Really bad smelly dogQ: I have a cocker/schitzu mix 10 years old. he has been on antibiotics for this problem but still smells so bad. the vet said not to bathe him too often , but yuck. he is raw only on his underside. i have done the oatmeal bathes too. help!!!!!!!!!! please!!!!!!!!! could it be something else? sincerely, beth A: I bet you he has yeast overgrowth on his skin given the breed mix he is. have vet check for this; antibiotics dont helpthis but an oral drug like ketaconazole can as well as antifungal shampoos
Body and feet odorQ: I have 2 basset hounds and i bathe them at least 1 time a week. they seem to get dirty fast. maybe because they are soooo low to the ground. but their feet always smell like a new bag of fritos being opened and it drives me nuts. have you ever heard this before? i hope you have some ideas because giving them a bath once a week is getting to be too much. abby weighs 50lbs and molly 48lbs. i do not take them to the groomer just because they are like my children and i love them to death. so please any suggestions would be grateful. thanks, lisa, abby and molly A: I would have vet exam as they could have yeast infection which is common in this breed often secondary to allergies. i would try ketochlor shampoo from 1800petmeds applied daily to area and let sit for 10 minutes before rinsing off feet to see if improves
