Yeast in catQ: My 13 year old cat has been dx with yeast. she has a pungent odor and discharge that mats the hair in the anal area. the vet had me shampoo her with malaseb. i did so for several months, but it did not help. is there anything that can be given orally for this problem? it seems to be coming from her inside, not a skin problem. your help would be appreciated. A: If seems to be coming from inside make sure no problems on bloodwork. occasionally can use oral antifungals but many cats have side effects from them. sounds more like anal gland problem to me. have another opinion
Skin diseases in dachshundsQ: Along time ago, my then-vet, who was a dachshund person, told me that dachshunds were prone to develop a skin condition which could result in hair loss, skin lesions and a nasty odor. my last male, who died couple of years back, had it so bad we had to have him put down. now my female, one of two, approx 7 years old, seems to have developed the condition; her skin stinks, although there is no significant accompanying hair loss and few skin lesions. we bathe her often, her coat looks glossy and sleek for a mahogany, but in a day or two, she stinks again. as they both live in the house with us and love to lounge on the furniture, this is creating significant odor problems. help ??? A: Aks your vet about yeast overgrowth on skin which needs special shampoos and sometimes oral antifungals. also consider skin biopsy for definitive diagonsis
