Excessive licking of anus/vulvaQ: My min-pin is constantly licking her private parts. i wonder if she has picked up an allergy from grass? she is in the house most of the time. is there any thing i can do like bath her in baking soda? A: You could try bathing in corticalm shampoo from 1800petmeds a few times a week which can help with allergic skin disease as well as try benadryl at 1/2 children's benadryl twice daily. if no help see your vet for stronger meds

Scratching, & bad odorQ: Hi i'm writing in reference to my 8 week old aussie. i saw this response to another user & was concerned she may have one or more of the issues you describe. could you please also reply to my email above. how can i tell if she has mange or scabies? it grosses me out & i feel terrible for her. my pup also has red spots, scabs, scratches all the time, whimpers & whines, so i know she is very uncomfortable & a terrble smell. i have bathed her, used advatage, she eats royal canin. i have only had her less than one week & she stinks terrble. i'm also using a hydrocotizone spray to help relieve her itching which seems to be helping some. here is what you replied to "jill" regarding her puppy with extreme scratching: no specifics to this breed at this age. two things i would consider if itching is as bad as you describe are hidden scabies mites, which dont always show up on skin scrapes at vet office or food allergies. a bit young for atopy, but not out of the question. if skin scrapes negative you still might want to treat him for possible hidden sarcoptes mange anyway with ivermectin once weekly as well as try low allergy prescription diet. also consider baths with 1800petmeds aloe vera and oatmeal shampoo and conditioner every few days which might help as well as adding prozyme and brite coat xs to hisfood that can help skin long term A: Please shorten question

Big white flakes on furQ: My black chow is having a time this summer with biting his hind fur off. now when i push his fur in the oposite direction i see his entire undercoat is extremely dry and flaking badly. should i pour baby oil on him or give him fish oil capsules in his food? A: I would try good supplement like brite coat xs from 1800petmeds as well as prozyme. also try chlorihexiderm shampoo every few days. if no help see vet

RingwormQ: How do i tell if my dog has ringworm? she has these 4 raised red circles on her stomach, and they look irrated. i looked for picturs on the internet, but could not find any. we just got her, and her previous owner did not know about it, and did not notice it until i mentioned it when we picked her up. i plan on taking her to the vet when i get paid, later on this week. but should we tie her up outside, or not pet her until we know for sure? thanks for any information you can give us on this topic. -marlena mackie A: More likely these are known as collaretts which is dermatologic term for overgrowth of staph bacteria in stomach(not contagious to us) due to underyling allergies also. usually easily treated with antibiotics orally. can also try chlorihexiderm shampoo from 1800petmeds every few days. vet can rule out ringworm definitively with fungal culture but i dont suspect it

Really bad smelly dogQ: I have a cocker/schitzu mix 10 years old. he has been on antibiotics for this problem but still smells so bad. the vet said not to bathe him too often , but yuck. he is raw only on his underside. i have done the oatmeal bathes too. help!!!!!!!!!! please!!!!!!!!! could it be something else? sincerely, beth A: I bet you he has yeast overgrowth on his skin given the breed mix he is. have vet check for this; antibiotics dont helpthis but an oral drug like ketaconazole can as well as antifungal shampoos
Parvo or allergy?Q: We gave our 3 month old pupies a flea bath. and our only female stared getting sick. she wont come when we call, she lays around, she wont eat, she has diarrea, and is very thin. if its parvo we already delt with it with the pups' mother. but the other 3 pups are fine, and we can't figure out whats going on. the father dog never had parvo. so any light on the subject could help. thanks for any help. A: Could be reaction to flea bath so might want to rinse dog in baby shampoo and rinse off. also could be parasite or otehr virus. take to vet for evaluation
