Mosquito bites
Q: I have a jack russell terrier and he's been scratching at what i think are mosquito bites. his legs now have scabs all over them and he can't stop scratching. what should i do?
A: Take to vet for exam and proper diagnosis. can try antibacterial shampoo llike chlorihexiderm shampoo from 1800petmeds every few days as well as oral benadryl at dose of 1/2 mg per pound orally twice daily. if no help see vet
Shop for: 1800petmeds

Dachsaund has lost hair from scratching
Q: My dog has just about lost all his hair every where he can gnaw. i have taken him to three vets and they all say different things. one said he is allergic to our grass. i have had him given one allergy shot and it helped him for three weeks. i am wanting to know if i can get something that i can give him myself. have tried the benedryl and selsen blue shampoo trick also and it did not help. please help me and him. he is miserable and so am i.
A: The long acting cortisone injections are not good for his immune system or adrenal glands and usually wear off in time you state where itching comes right back. you oould ask your vet for prescription for low dose oral prednisone which you can taper to every other day therapy after a few weeks but stay away from injections. you could also ask about new drug called atopica which is steroid alternative without as many side effects long term. ideally should allergy test to find out what allergic to so vaccines can be developed if problems keep reoccurring, and also consider low allergy diet in case food involved
Shop for: prednisone

Skin diseases in dachshunds
Q: Along time ago, my then-vet, who was a dachshund person, told me that dachshunds were prone to develop a skin condition which could result in hair loss, skin lesions and a nasty odor. my last male, who died couple of years back, had it so bad we had to have him put down. now my female, one of two, approx 7 years old, seems to have developed the condition; her skin stinks, although there is no significant accompanying hair loss and few skin lesions. we bathe her often, her coat looks glossy and sleek for a mahogany, but in a day or two, she stinks again. as they both live in the house with us and love to lounge on the furniture, this is creating significant odor problems. help ???
A: Aks your vet about yeast overgrowth on skin which needs special shampoos and sometimes oral antifungals. also consider skin biopsy for definitive diagonsis

Bald spots
Q: My dog has bald spots on each side of her tail and her skin is always itching.
A: Check for presence of fleas with fleacomb as well as have vet check anal sacs and rule out other allergies. try corticare shampoo from 1800petmeds and oral benadryl at dose of 1/2 mg per pound orally twice daily. if no help see vet
Shop for: 1800petmeds

Body and feet odor
Q: I have 2 basset hounds and i bathe them at least 1 time a week. they seem to get dirty fast. maybe because they are soooo low to the ground. but their feet always smell like a new bag of fritos being opened and it drives me nuts. have you ever heard this before? i hope you have some ideas because giving them a bath once a week is getting to be too much. abby weighs 50lbs and molly 48lbs. i do not take them to the groomer just because they are like my children and i love them to death. so please any suggestions would be grateful. thanks, lisa, abby and molly
A: I would have vet exam as they could have yeast infection which is common in this breed often secondary to allergies. i would try ketochlor shampoo from 1800petmeds applied daily to area and let sit for 10 minutes before rinsing off feet to see if improves
Shop for: 1800petmeds

Flea allergy
Q: Dear vet, my dog is allergic to flea bites. he licks his hind quarters constantly. i found small scaby bumps on his skin in the areas where he is licking. i use frontline plus on him. he weighs 10 pounds and is a shihtzu. i bathe him frequently, because he gets so dirty. what can i do to ease him of his licking? thanks.
A: You can try oral antihistamine like benadryl at dose of 1/2 to 1 mg per pound orally twice daily as well as fatty acid supplement like derm caps from 1800petmeds which might help long term with skin. can also try bathing with antiitch shampoo like corticare from 1800petmeds every few days. if persists, see vet as might have secondary bacterial infection which might need oral antibiotics
Shop for: 1800petmeds, antihistamine, frontline plus

Itching continues
Q: Our 1 year old female is constatnly scratching herself. she looks so uncomfortable! she has been on frontline and heartguard sice she was old enough to get it and recently was spayed. the vet can not determine what is wrong. no fleas. is there a supplement i can give her or anti itch medications?
A: I would supplement her with omega 3 fatty acids like derm caps from 1800petmeds or flax seed oil at dose of 1 tea per 20 pounds of body weight daily. also purchase prozyme as source of digestive enzymes which can help long term. also periodic bathing with oatmeal shampoon and daily condioner like episoothe is helpful as well. you could try antihistamines at same time like benadryl at 1 mg per pound twice daily or hydroxyzine at same dose. if these no help may need allergy testing or restricted low allergy diet. also make sure pet has been skin scraped by vet for skin parasites
Shop for: antihistamine, prozyme, 1800petmeds
