Fleas on humansQ: I read the question someone else asked and your treatment. i think they are in my daughter`s hair and a simple shower is not the trick. i did a rid x treatment on her. is it ok to try flea shampoo? some are telling me they are lice but i have researched both and i think they are fleas. A: I would not recommend dog products on humans. i would see a human dermatologist for best treatment as well as definitive diagnosis. fleas do not live on people especially after bathing them off. at least the fleas that our dogs and cats get
Yeast in catQ: My 13 year old cat has been dx with yeast. she has a pungent odor and discharge that mats the hair in the anal area. the vet had me shampoo her with malaseb. i did so for several months, but it did not help. is there anything that can be given orally for this problem? it seems to be coming from her inside, not a skin problem. your help would be appreciated. A: If seems to be coming from inside make sure no problems on bloodwork. occasionally can use oral antifungals but many cats have side effects from them. sounds more like anal gland problem to me. have another opinion
BumpsQ: I have a rottie/husky mix he is 4yrs old, i have notice small bumps behind his left shoulder, and his inside hind legs i'm not sure if they are the same type. the ones on he hind legs seem to itch some he doesn't bother his left shouler at all. but they are in clusters, any help would be greatly appreciated. A: Sounds like could be superficial bacterial infection of skin secondary allergic itching. i would see vet to have checked out. you could try ketachlor shampoo from 1800petmeds used every few days on skin which can help as well as well as oral benadryl at dose of 1/2 to 1 mg per pound orally twice daily in case allergies involved

Staph infection yearlyQ: My 8 year old blenheim cavalier has staph infections all summer long, starting in early spring and lasting until late fall. it's never-ending. he has been on 500 mg. of cephalexin, hexdene shampoo, plus a bunch of other shots, etc., totaling over $200 a month ago. (vet price per pill of this is 67.5 cents.) is it possible to keep him on the anti-biotic cephalexin all summer? he has been on prednisone for long periods in the past, but that bothers me greatly. he seems to do well and the other complications don't occur, such as ear infections, eye problems, etc. when he is on the cephalexin. clavamox really doesn't do the trick. each year seems to get worse. our vet also has suggested changing his diet to venison and potato. any ideas on that? his half-brother, a tri-color cav has none of this, only dry skin. A: It is possible to keep an animal on long term cephalexin therapy as long as the drug is not discontinued before the infection is cleared. there is the issue of developing resistance to the antibiotic if therapy is started and stopped without completely clearing the infection.
