Lab's and dry skinQ: Cody is shedding fierce. i understand that we are now in the middle of summer and this would normal. he is kept clean, indoor dog, treating him withrimadyl 100 mg chewable... he will be 10 on aug 11 th. but my biggest problem is the white flaking. i take him out side and he loves to br brushed and the more i take care to brush him and then check through his hair line, i can't tell if the skin, in itself is the culpert or if taking him to a different place to have him receive his tlc. bless his 108 lb heart, this is one english lab that is made entirely of love. can you recommend something for a. some of the schedding, but b. the flaking . most respectfully A: Try topical shampoos such as 1800petmeds aloe vera and oatmeal conditioner and shampoo every few days as well as adding supplements to food such as prozyme and brite coat xs from 1800petmeds. also consider natural diet such as pet guard or california natural or wellness brands

Constant itching for puppyQ: Hi, brand new to our life is a 2-month old miniature schnauzer. since we got him, he has been itching a lot; his legs, towards his rear, his ears, his face sometimes. we'll be out for a walk, and he'll stop many many times to scratch. it seems to impede normal activity, and may be affecting his personality. i've done a lot of research online, and was thinking atopy, but thought you might lend some insight into this before i contact my own vet. when we took him in for his first check up after we got him, the vet said that while he has flakiness, that she thought it was just dandruff. but, he scratches so much, i feel so bad, he needs some relief soon! is there anything i should ask the vet specifically? anything i can do in the short term? is there something specific to miniature schnauzers that i should be aware of? thanks, jill A: No specifics to this breed at this age. two things i would consider if itching is as bad as you describe are hidden scabies mites, which dont always show up on skin scrapes at vet office or food allergies. a bit young for atopy, but not out of the question. if skin scrapes negative you still might want to treat him for possible hidden sarcoptes mange anyway with ivermectin once weekly as well as try low allergy prescription diet. also consider baths with 1800petmeds aloe vera and oatmeal shampoo and conditioner every few days which might help as well as adding prozyme and brite coat xs to hisfood that can help skin long term

Itching, losing some hair, rough line on the skinQ: Our 3 year old beagle has two places on his coat near his left hind leg. he scratches and there are some rough places like little lines or bumps under the hair. his hair has thinned in those spaces, also. our local pet store gave us a shampoo to use, but a day or so after the bath, he begins scratching again. our vet just told us to use some cortisone, but that doesn't seem to clear up what this is. any suggestions? A: Topical treatment is only at best partially helpful. sounds like could be secondary bacterial infection on skin from underyling allergies. usually need oral antibiotics and oral antihistamines to help from your vet

Skin diseases in dachshundsQ: Along time ago, my then-vet, who was a dachshund person, told me that dachshunds were prone to develop a skin condition which could result in hair loss, skin lesions and a nasty odor. my last male, who died couple of years back, had it so bad we had to have him put down. now my female, one of two, approx 7 years old, seems to have developed the condition; her skin stinks, although there is no significant accompanying hair loss and few skin lesions. we bathe her often, her coat looks glossy and sleek for a mahogany, but in a day or two, she stinks again. as they both live in the house with us and love to lounge on the furniture, this is creating significant odor problems. help ??? A: Aks your vet about yeast overgrowth on skin which needs special shampoos and sometimes oral antifungals. also consider skin biopsy for definitive diagonsis
Severe itching, constant scratching, increased intake of waterQ: My dog is a 10 yr old beagle/corgie mix. for the past week she has been scratching, rubbing & licking herself so much that patches of hair are missing. she works so hard at scratching that she pants - endlessly & drinks tons of water but really does not seem to have increased urine output. in addition, she is refusing to eat her food except if handfed. i am certain this needs futher workup but what can i do to relieve her apparent misery? A: Try corticare shampoo from 1800petmeds every few days from 1800petmeds as well as antihistamine like chlorphenirmine at dose of 4 mg twice daily but should take to vet for complete workupa t this age

Staph infection/allergyQ: I have a four year old golden lab that has a persistant staph infection on her skin. it has gone from a seasonal problem to an all year problem. now the hair over the spots is thinning and falling out as the scabs fall off. i have used antibiotics and shampoo to treat this with little success. it has been suggested that this could be due to allergy. if so, what other options to antibiotics and shampoo do i have. thank you for any help you can offer. ron A: I would recommend blood allergy testing to find out what inhalent allergens your dog is allergic to so vaccine can be made for best long term relief. also consider low allergy diet in case food allergies involved. in meantime you could try different antihistamines like benadryl at dose of 1/2 to 1 mg per pound twice daily. if vet unwilling, see a vet dermatologist
