Odor control
Q: I have a labrador retriever, and she smell so bad after few day of her bath. if there any shampoo to use in her to control that bad odor?
A: It could be a yeast or fungus infection.|try using malaseb shampoo.

Scratching, & bad odor
Q: Hi i'm writing in reference to my 8 week old aussie. i saw this response to another user & was concerned she may have one or more of the issues you describe. could you please also reply to my email above. how can i tell if she has mange or scabies? it grosses me out & i feel terrible for her. my pup also has red spots, scabs, scratches all the time, whimpers & whines, so i know she is very uncomfortable & a terrble smell. i have bathed her, used advatage, she eats royal canin. i have only had her less than one week & she stinks terrble. i'm also using a hydrocotizone spray to help relieve her itching which seems to be helping some. here is what you replied to "jill" regarding her puppy with extreme scratching: no specifics to this breed at this age. two things i would consider if itching is as bad as you describe are hidden scabies mites, which dont always show up on skin scrapes at vet office or food allergies. a bit young for atopy, but not out of the question. if skin scrapes negative you still might want to treat him for possible hidden sarcoptes mange anyway with ivermectin once weekly as well as try low allergy prescription diet. also consider baths with 1800petmeds aloe vera and oatmeal shampoo and conditioner every few days which might help as well as adding prozyme and brite coat xs to hisfood that can help skin long term
A: Please shorten question
Shop for: prozyme, 1800petmeds

Constant itching for puppy
Q: Hi, brand new to our life is a 2-month old miniature schnauzer. since we got him, he has been itching a lot; his legs, towards his rear, his ears, his face sometimes. we'll be out for a walk, and he'll stop many many times to scratch. it seems to impede normal activity, and may be affecting his personality. i've done a lot of research online, and was thinking atopy, but thought you might lend some insight into this before i contact my own vet. when we took him in for his first check up after we got him, the vet said that while he has flakiness, that she thought it was just dandruff. but, he scratches so much, i feel so bad, he needs some relief soon! is there anything i should ask the vet specifically? anything i can do in the short term? is there something specific to miniature schnauzers that i should be aware of? thanks, jill

Bald spots
Q: My dog has bald spots on each side of her tail and her skin is always itching.
A: Check for presence of fleas with fleacomb as well as have vet check anal sacs and rule out other allergies. try corticare shampoo from 1800petmeds and oral benadryl at dose of 1/2 mg per pound orally twice daily. if no help see vet
Shop for: 1800petmeds

Scratching, rashe, chewing
Q: I have a 4 months old jack who has extemely red, skin ,especially on his stomach, under legs and chess. he scartch himself that is causing red rasheshe scratches and bites until he bleeds sometimes . what do you suggest?. can you tell me what to do for my baby so he can feel better? thank you for your time. lili.
A: You could try corticare shampoo from 1800petmeds every few days as well as oral benadryl at dose of 1/2 to 1 mg per pound orally twice daily. if persists, need to see vet for compete skin workup including skin scraping, allergy assessment, etc
Shop for: 1800petmeds

Rough black skin
Q: I have a german shephard/chow mix breed dog. he gets rough dry black in color and loses his hair mainly around his hind legs. but it has also moved to his left ear. the vet says it is yeast and gave me shampoo & ear drops nothing seems to be working .she also gave him a cortisone shot.could this be something else? thanks!
A: If truly fungal, than you might want to ask your vet about oral antifungal drugs like itraconazole or ketaconazole which sometimes are more effective than just topical therapies. if your vet not making progress, consider direct exam by second vet or vet dermatologist to address underyling causes as well like allergies, thyroid issues, etc

Staph infection yearly
Q: My 8 year old blenheim cavalier has staph infections all summer long, starting in early spring and lasting until late fall. it's never-ending. he has been on 500 mg. of cephalexin, hexdene shampoo, plus a bunch of other shots, etc., totaling over $200 a month ago. (vet price per pill of this is 67.5 cents.) is it possible to keep him on the anti-biotic cephalexin all summer? he has been on prednisone for long periods in the past, but that bothers me greatly. he seems to do well and the other complications don't occur, such as ear infections, eye problems, etc. when he is on the cephalexin. clavamox really doesn't do the trick. each year seems to get worse. our vet also has suggested changing his diet to venison and potato. any ideas on that? his half-brother, a tri-color cav has none of this, only dry skin.
A: It is possible to keep an animal on long term cephalexin therapy as long as the drug is not discontinued before the infection is cleared. there is the issue of developing resistance to the antibiotic if therapy is started and stopped without completely clearing the infection.
Shop for: prednisone
