Lab's and dry skin
Q: Cody is shedding fierce. i understand that we are now in the middle of summer and this would normal. he is kept clean, indoor dog, treating him withrimadyl 100 mg chewable... he will be 10 on aug 11 th. but my biggest problem is the white flaking. i take him out side and he loves to br brushed and the more i take care to brush him and then check through his hair line, i can't tell if the skin, in itself is the culpert or if taking him to a different place to have him receive his tlc. bless his 108 lb heart, this is one english lab that is made entirely of love. can you recommend something for a. some of the schedding, but b. the flaking . most respectfully
A: Try topical shampoos such as 1800petmeds aloe vera and oatmeal conditioner and shampoo every few days as well as adding supplements to food such as prozyme and brite coat xs from 1800petmeds. also consider natural diet such as pet guard or california natural or wellness brands

Clean up after upper resp infect.
Q: I adopted a 10 week old kitten a week ago. two days later she started sneezing alot. took her in, they said it was an upper respiratory infection. take all the meds home, put her in a separate room away from my other cats and spend the next several days trying to treat her. she got worse i took her back in 3 times before they admitted her. finally today one week exactly from the day i adopted her she was euthanized. my question is the room i kept her in has carpet and contains their kitty condos. how do clean or disinfect the area so the others can play in it again? after cleaning how long do i keep them out of it? and last approximately how much time needs to pass to make sure the others are past any incubation period and i know that they are ok?
A: Since we dont know what killed first cat i cant comment on incubation period. probably a few weeks at most in most cases unless kitten had fip which can appear at any time randomly. i would steam clean carpets and kitty condos and have rugs shampooed

Scratching and biting hair off
Q: I have a one yr old black and white chihuahua. for the last 6 months has been scratchinhg and biting her hair of completely from feet, legs backside. she is on advantix and is free of fleas. her vet has her on predisone 1/2 pill every three days now. also bendadryl 25mg 1/4 daily. bathe with oatmeal shampoo. i know allergy testing is next, but thought doggie prozac might be next. also she slows down on the biting and scratching when my daughter holds her (lap dog) are we doing the right thing with this treatment or what do you advise? save my chloe!!!!
A: Allergy testing does appear to be the next step of the process.

Demodex (red mange)
Q: My 6 mo. old lab mix was diagnosed with demodex just yesterday. she has started the ivermectin treatments, the brand i was given is ivomec. my question is what supplements can i give her to ensure a healthy coat and help give her immune system a boost? i would also like to know if you have any suggestions for itch relief. i have bailey on benadryl and i put lanacane cream on her. i also am bathing her weekly w/ a anti-bacterial shampoo w/ sulphur. just want to know if there is anything else i can do to make her more comfortable until the ivomec kicks in. thank you very much.
A: For immune system i would try digestive enzymes like prozyme as well as essential fatty acids like flax seed oil at 1 tea per 20 pounds of body weight daily. i also like a supplement available from healthfood stores for this condition known as dimethyl glycine(dmg) at dose of 250 mg daily. for itching i would temporarily use oral benadryl at 1 mg per pound twice daily and try some blue aloe gel shampoo from 1800petmeds
Shop for: ivomec, prozyme, 1800petmeds

Scatching,lose oh hair,
Q: My 9 year old cat started losing her hair on her back side. she is an inside cat. i have another cat that is inside outside. i had a flea collar on her but she became infested by fleas anyway. she started to get sores around her neck and head. i started to use a natural flea collar on her and bathing her with flea shampoo. the problem is getting worse. she is know sratching herself until she bleeds and i know she is in pain. i can not afford to take her to a vet right know. what can i do to relive her.
A: I think you should use one of the topoical flea control products such as frontline plus or advantage. you should also check our website under "education" & "flea control" to get some ideas on how to control the fleas in your home.

Shedding and dry skin
Q: I have 3 dogs, two 4 y/o border collie mix and one 1 y/o border collie/lab mix. all three have dry skin and scratch until they develop sores all in the same spots on the front upper portion of their legs. i tried an anti-bacterial shampoo to no avail, but now the 1 y/o started shedding hair in clumps from her back and thighs and still scratching. shortly after she started shedding, one of my 4 y/o started shedding, too. is it true that oatmeal shampoo helps restore the oil that they lose from bathing? can you just sprinkle dry oatmeal in their food as well? thanks for your response. janice
A: Dry oatmeal does not work as well but good shampoos like 1800petmeds aloe vera and oatmeal shampoo and conditioner are excellent here. also you should consider allergy workup at your vet for inhalent allergies or food allergies as causes of itching, etc try brite coat xs from 1800petmeds as source of fatty acids for coats long term health
Shop for: 1800petmeds

Yorkie pulling out hair
Q: I have a yorkie-poo and she itches all the time. she bites her skin so much that she has pulled out most of her hair. tried all kinds of lotions shampoos and different types of rice and lamb food. nothing helps her. what should i do?
A: You need full workup at vet including skin scrape to make sure no skin parasite or mange as well as more likely allergy workup as causes including inhalent seasonal allergies and/or food allergies. sometimes more restricted diet needed like venison based food or prescription diet purina ha. also might benefit from blood or skin allergy testing for best long term solution

A: Sounds like secondary bacterial infection which might need oral antibiotics so should see vet who can also rule out mange by skin scrape. if negative likely underyling allergies. in meantime try chlorihexiderm shampoo from 1800petmeds every few days as well as oral benadryl at dose of 1/2 to 1 mg per pound orally twice daily to see if help with ithcing
