Scratching, & bad odorQ: Hi i'm writing in reference to my 8 week old aussie. i saw this response to another user & was concerned she may have one or more of the issues you describe. could you please also reply to my email above. how can i tell if she has mange or scabies? it grosses me out & i feel terrible for her. my pup also has red spots, scabs, scratches all the time, whimpers & whines, so i know she is very uncomfortable & a terrble smell. i have bathed her, used advatage, she eats royal canin. i have only had her less than one week & she stinks terrble. i'm also using a hydrocotizone spray to help relieve her itching which seems to be helping some. here is what you replied to "jill" regarding her puppy with extreme scratching: no specifics to this breed at this age. two things i would consider if itching is as bad as you describe are hidden scabies mites, which dont always show up on skin scrapes at vet office or food allergies. a bit young for atopy, but not out of the question. if skin scrapes negative you still might want to treat him for possible hidden sarcoptes mange anyway with ivermectin once weekly as well as try low allergy prescription diet. also consider baths with 1800petmeds aloe vera and oatmeal shampoo and conditioner every few days which might help as well as adding prozyme and brite coat xs to hisfood that can help skin long term A: Please shorten question

How long?Q: My 6 month old boxer is on orbax 68 mg one a day, nizoral 200 mg 1/2 a day and medrol now at 1 mg a day. he is on malaseb shampoo for what the dermatologist has diagnosed as a "yeast infection" allergic dermatitis, folliculitis...it has been 3 weeks and there has been improvement but he still bites at his paws they are very pinkish still and he breaks out into these little bumps around his body. he has 3 weeks left of his meds. my question is would you recommend anything else? how about boosting his immune system. p.s. he is on ivd duck and potato food and can eat veggies and fruits. thank you for any advice you may have. A: I would ask allergist about allergy testing for inhalent allergies through blood or skin test for best long term relief. also can ask allergist about new drug called atopica which is steroid alternative and safer than medrol to use long term
Mange mitesQ: How do i get rid of mange mites, is ivomec still the best treatment? A: The treatment of demodectic mange is usually accomplished with lotions, dips, and shampoos. fortunately, 90% of demodectic mange cases are localized, in which only a few small areas are involved and can often be treated topically. recently, a 5% benzoyl peroxide gel applied daily. bathing periodically with a benzoyl peroxide shampoo and feeding a high quality diet and a multivitamin with a fatty acid may also help some dogs. most of these localized lesions will heal on their own and do not require overly aggressive treatment.||

K9 advantix vs biospot vs frontline plusQ: Hi, it looks like from your chart that biospot does more than the rest. we have bad mosquitos here in chicago and i worry about them as much as fleas and ticks. also, it seems like you recommend frontline more, why? and, does biospot wash off completely after bathing. what if you put it on and don't bath the dog for a few days? will it stay on the rest of the month then? thanks for all your help. we have a golden retriever that is 60 pounds. sherri A: K-9 advantix is completely waterproof. biospot will begin to loose effectiveness after shampooing. i recommend frontline plus based on my experience, but if you need mosquito control as well, you should use k-9 advantix.

Flea bite allergyQ: I have an 11 year old female cat in very good health, vet checked couple of months ago. she weights 7lbs, small cat. when biten by a flea, she reacts by constantly cleaning herself, loses her fur on her belly and around her hind legs. the vet gave her a shot which relieved the cleaning compulsion almost immediately. now it is happening again. what should i do. what meds, shampoo etc. thank you. A: Try oral chlorphenirmine at dose of 2 mg twice daily as well as adding derm caps from 1800petmeds to her food. also consider 1800petmeds aloe vera and oatmeal shampoo an deconditioner. this is better alternative in this aged cat than long acting cortisone shots
