Really bad smelly dogQ: I have a cocker/schitzu mix 10 years old. he has been on antibiotics for this problem but still smells so bad. the vet said not to bathe him too often , but yuck. he is raw only on his underside. i have done the oatmeal bathes too. help!!!!!!!!!! please!!!!!!!!! could it be something else? sincerely, beth A: I bet you he has yeast overgrowth on his skin given the breed mix he is. have vet check for this; antibiotics dont helpthis but an oral drug like ketaconazole can as well as antifungal shampoos
Clean up after upper resp infect.Q: I adopted a 10 week old kitten a week ago. two days later she started sneezing alot. took her in, they said it was an upper respiratory infection. take all the meds home, put her in a separate room away from my other cats and spend the next several days trying to treat her. she got worse i took her back in 3 times before they admitted her. finally today one week exactly from the day i adopted her she was euthanized. my question is the room i kept her in has carpet and contains their kitty condos. how do clean or disinfect the area so the others can play in it again? after cleaning how long do i keep them out of it? and last approximately how much time needs to pass to make sure the others are past any incubation period and i know that they are ok? A: Since we dont know what killed first cat i cant comment on incubation period. probably a few weeks at most in most cases unless kitten had fip which can appear at any time randomly. i would steam clean carpets and kitty condos and have rugs shampooed
Puppy chewing on her skin...Q: I have two grooming questions about our 5 month old bloodhound puppy... first, i have noticed her chewing on her skin a lot recently. it is mostly around her hind-end and at the base of her tail. she is currently loosing her puppy fur and getting her adult coat, in addition it is summer so she is shedding a lot. could the shedding make her itchy? we would like to find a way to keep her from chewing on herself. secondly, what is the best way to clean out her ears and how often should we do it? thank you! A: Can clean out ears with any number of commercial solutions like 1800petmedsear cleaning solution which you can flush liberally down ear canals as often as needed(when build up of wax dictates) and then wipe outside ears with cotton balls. see article i wrote i ear care on education part of this website for more detailed discussion. as for shedding and itching, may or may not be related. itching likely allergy related. make sure no fleas around by checking groin area out and flea combing her with special flea comb. also consider low allergy prescription diet like purina ha which might help if food allergies involved. try good shampoo like 1800petmeds aloe vera and oatmeal shampoo and conditioner a few times weekly as well as adding prozyme and brite coat xs to help with coat long term

Constant itchingQ: I have a pure breed minature poodle that is constantly scratching himself. there are no skin abrasions or even any open wounds. he seems to scratch and lick alot.there are no fleas occasionally he gets a tick that i carefully remove. we are using k9 advantix at present but i ordering frontline instead. i am also putting a small amount of oil on his food to see if that stops it. i bathe him with johnsons baby shampoo my vet sais that would be okay. any suggestions? A: I would use corticare shampoo every few days from 1800petmeds as well as corticare lotion in between. also try better oil like flax seed oil at dose of 1 tea per 20 pounds of body weight daily which can help when used long term. also consider prozyme from 1800petmeds added to food.l at same time might want to use antihistamine like chlortrimeton at dose of 1 mg twice daily or one of prescription ones from your vet
