Ear mites & mange
Q: I have my dog back and forth to the vet for a few months now. first i was told she had earmites and that she had to have a series of shots which she had. she has had revolution, special shampoos, then all of a sudden i'm being told she has another kind of a mite. and so were starting all over again. this has been going on now for at least 4 months. the last thing that they did lasted for about 3 weeks. i was told the problem was over and done with but $500 plus dollars later i still have the problem. i called and told these so called vets and they said bring her back. i said do i have to pay more money for her to be looked at again for the same problem they said was over with and of course i was told yes i don't think that this was very fair especially for someone who is disabled and on a very, very fixed income, but they showed how much they care about animals the only thing they cared about was more money. it does not matter if the dog is suffering all over again. i have no more money that is the gods honest truth. i would like to know what i could get that would help her? her biggest problem is that her hair is falling out and she has a really bad odor. so far her ears seem to be ok. please, please help me i don't know what else to do except take her to a shelter so they can take care of her so shes not suffering. that is the last thing in the world i want to do she is such a lovable, smart, wonderful companion, but i wont let her suffer. please please help me. thank you very much for letting me take up your time. and if anyone would like to know who this so called vet is i would be more than happy to tell them. thanks again.
A: Sorry about your experiences as it soudns like best thing is for vet dermatologist to have looked at dog and you would not be going through all of this. best i can suggest is chlorihexiderm shampoo from 1800petmeds used every few days and also use aloe vera conditioner from them as well. try blue ear ointment for any ear issues www.itsfortheanimals.com which you can buy your own ingredients
Shop for: 1800petmeds, revolution

How long?
Q: My 6 month old boxer is on orbax 68 mg one a day, nizoral 200 mg 1/2 a day and medrol now at 1 mg a day. he is on malaseb shampoo for what the dermatologist has diagnosed as a "yeast infection" allergic dermatitis, folliculitis...it has been 3 weeks and there has been improvement but he still bites at his paws they are very pinkish still and he breaks out into these little bumps around his body. he has 3 weeks left of his meds. my question is would you recommend anything else? how about boosting his immune system. p.s. he is on ivd duck and potato food and can eat veggies and fruits. thank you for any advice you may have.
A: I would ask allergist about allergy testing for inhalent allergies through blood or skin test for best long term relief. also can ask allergist about new drug called atopica which is steroid alternative and safer than medrol to use long term

Mosquito bites
Q: I have a jack russell terrier and he's been scratching at what i think are mosquito bites. his legs now have scabs all over them and he can't stop scratching. what should i do?
A: Take to vet for exam and proper diagnosis. can try antibacterial shampoo llike chlorihexiderm shampoo from 1800petmeds every few days as well as oral benadryl at dose of 1/2 mg per pound orally twice daily. if no help see vet
Shop for: 1800petmeds

Dachsaund has lost hair from scratching
Q: My dog has just about lost all his hair every where he can gnaw. i have taken him to three vets and they all say different things. one said he is allergic to our grass. i have had him given one allergy shot and it helped him for three weeks. i am wanting to know if i can get something that i can give him myself. have tried the benedryl and selsen blue shampoo trick also and it did not help. please help me and him. he is miserable and so am i.
A: The long acting cortisone injections are not good for his immune system or adrenal glands and usually wear off in time you state where itching comes right back. you oould ask your vet for prescription for low dose oral prednisone which you can taper to every other day therapy after a few weeks but stay away from injections. you could also ask about new drug called atopica which is steroid alternative without as many side effects long term. ideally should allergy test to find out what allergic to so vaccines can be developed if problems keep reoccurring, and also consider low allergy diet in case food involved
Shop for: prednisone

Mange or not
Q: Have a after running him the other day he started scratching and has lost hair on his back in spots and has rash on his ears belly bald spots on his legs.what kind of medication could i get for him/
A: Could be likely allergies but cant be sure about mange without skin scrape at vet. you could try cortisoothe shampoo every few days from 1800petmeds in addition to oral benadryl at dose of 1/2 to 1 mg per pound twice daily. if no help see your vet
Shop for: 1800petmeds

Ongoing skin irritation
Q: My adopted bos terrier (approx. 6yrs & n.male) moe - battles an ongoing skin irritation - blisters that i never see, pop and leave bald spots - near the hind quarter - the vet continues giving moe benadryl and suspects an allergy - the spots don't seem to itch moe - but they look really awful and mangy. they range from 1/2" to 1" in diameter. we periodically do an antibiotics and i bath moe often with an allergy shampoo - any suggestions? - also lately has had 2 brief episodes of diarehhea and i'm afraid it's due to the benadryl - thanks for your help! moe's mom - sharon
A: Sounds like underyling allergy. |ifyou really want to get to bottom you could consider low allergy diet to see if food related or blood allergy testing to find out what allergic to so can develop allergy vaccine. otherwise left with symptomatic care like you are doing

Flea allergy
Q: Dear vet, my dog is allergic to flea bites. he licks his hind quarters constantly. i found small scaby bumps on his skin in the areas where he is licking. i use frontline plus on him. he weighs 10 pounds and is a shihtzu. i bathe him frequently, because he gets so dirty. what can i do to ease him of his licking? thanks.
A: You can try oral antihistamine like benadryl at dose of 1/2 to 1 mg per pound orally twice daily as well as fatty acid supplement like derm caps from 1800petmeds which might help long term with skin. can also try bathing with antiitch shampoo like corticare from 1800petmeds every few days. if persists, see vet as might have secondary bacterial infection which might need oral antibiotics
Shop for: 1800petmeds, antihistamine, frontline plus
